A full renovation of a 12th Street shophouse unit, rebuilt into a bright home with feature ceilings and a checkerboard-tiled kitchen.

A complete renovation of a shophouse unit on 12th Street. The long, high-ceilinged plan typical of these buildings is kept and worked with rather than against: the main room runs from a patterned frosted-glass street frontage, framed by the original steel grille and folding gates, back through a tall corridor lit from above.

New dropped ceilings carry the lighting design: recessed downlights set into gypsum trays with warm concealed coves, including a wave-profile bulkhead that runs the length of the corridor. Floors throughout the living spaces are laid in light timber-look laminate against fresh white and grey walls, with the original barred windows repainted white and kept as internal light sources.

At the rear, the kitchen and wet area take a different character: powder-blue walls under the full ceiling height, a black-and-white checkerboard tiled floor, white counter units and an attached bathroom. The unit was handed over as a blank, finished shell ready to furnish.
