Okkalapa Apartment

Yangon · residential · 3 photographs

A top-floor apartment in Okkalapa opened up under its pitched roof, with a battened ceiling lining, laminate flooring and a new timber stair.

The apartment occupies the top floor of the block and takes its character from the roof above it. Rather than a flat suspended ceiling, the pitch is lined out and left exposed, following the slope up to the ridge and stepping across where the roof planes change direction. The lining is set out in a visible battened grid with recessed downlights placed in the panels.

The result is a single large open room with white plastered walls, timber-look laminate plank flooring and dark stained skirting. Daylight comes from small sliding windows set high in the side walls and from a steel security door onto a balcony at the far end. The space is left clear and unpartitioned, ready for the client to furnish.

A third photograph shows the stair serving the floor, finished in the same laminate boards with contrasting dark stained nosings on each tread, turning at a landing beside a window.
